Fostering With Reach For The Stars Rescue

URGENTLY NEEDED FOSTERS

'The Boys'
Numeg and Sage
Foster needed through the fall and return of their lonterm foster mommies when school resumes.

Peppercorn Socks and Phlox
Two boys and a girls that seem inseperable. The boys are natural brothers, Phlox is a few months younger, but the three of them are alway together, whether creating mischief or just lazing about for snuggles....

As a foster based rescue organization RFTSR does not have a shelter, refuge or other building where we house our rescue animals. All our animals are kept in foster homes where they are cared for and loved in a family environment. Due to this we are constantly in need of foster homes able to provide a place for a rescue animal to wait in a comfortable and safe environment for their forever family to find them. Fostering is a wonderful option for those who want to have an animal at home but cannot make an 18+ year commitment.

RFTSR We provide all food, litter, blankets, toys and of course all the medical care needed by the foster animal. We feel that since we ask for sepcific brands to be used, in keeping with our commitment to natural care, that it is our responsibility to provide these products to our foster homes. Being dependant on fundraising, are always grateful for donations of food and litter by their foster families, but this is not required to be a foster family.

All potential foster homes are required to complete a foster application and have a homecheck before they are approved to have an animal placed in their home. Duration of fostering varies and we always hope to find homes that can keep the rescue animal until it's forever home is found, but we prefer if you could commit to at least a minimum of 8 weeks.

Potential foster homes with experience or a willingness to take in special cases such as pregnancy/nursing babies, bottle feeders, food aggression and other special needs like Shelby with her neurological problems that make her seem seriously autistic are encouraged to contact us.

The Following Animals Are In Need of Foster Homes

Cats

Chocolate - household with interactive people, could have a kind, quiet dog. People should be able to be patient with his amusingly disgruntled attitude and his inappropriate 'marking'!

Dahlia - quieter households with affectionate people and dogs. Needs space and quiet.

Socks, Phlox & Peppercorn - these three monkeys are looking for a foster home together
Socks - active household with other playful cats and dogs, declawed front paws, now needs litterbox re-training
Peppercorn - a snuggly, loving, outgoing, confident guy, Peppercorn loves to lick the dishes in the sink and is somewhat of the ring leader. He and Socks are brothers.
Phlox - is a bit younger than the boys and the only girl in the group. Tough as nails but a sucker for petting and love this kitten with the sweet, little, highpitched meow is a comical mystery.

Toutou - mischevious and clumsy this sweet young boy will keep you laughing for hours! Toutou is very cat friendly, fine with dogs and great with people. He can be snuggly but is quite energetic and loves to play.

Caya - the cat that should have been a TNR but wasn't! If you look up 'catty' in the dictionary you will find a picture of Caya. This cat is special. She obviously wants love and affection but there is an issue with receiving it. The issue is you end up clawed and bit!!! She can be affectionate when she feels like it but more likely she will be swatting and biting and threatening. Watching her struggle with a desire to be loved and a conflicting desire to keep everyone at bay can, at times, turn comical. As long as you can see the comical side of things while bleeding - just kidding! This little terror will follow you around like a puppy dog and be everywhere you are, rolling around, stretching and being generally cute. She is not aggressive to the point of blatantly attacking anyone - it's more of a defense if you get too close. If you back off so will she. Caya can give a 'high five' with her multi-toed mitten paws and this trick is a great tool for calming down her anger ;o) Very dialed in to the pecking order if you tell this cat 'no' she will find the next closest living thing and swat it!! Not for a household with other animals or young children. If you have a country dwelling and would be willing to add possibly add Caya (she has been spayed and vaccinated) to your well loved and cared for country cat family we would love to speak with you.

URGENT - Nutmeg & Sage (pictured)
These boys are brothers. Not by blood but by a wonderful mom who took in Nutmeg alongside her three kittens and raised him as her own. Their two sisters are in another foster home. When the kittens were several weeks and we had reason to go to the vet their mom displayed one unusual behaviour which the vet noticed and led to the discovery of her FIV positive status. Therefore these boys are a bit older and are waiting for an FIV test and their sterilization. They have a foster home to go back to in the fall, but need a place to stay until then. About a year old they can be playful and rambunctious. Sage is a big laid back attention seeker, but once he gets over his shyness with you it is Nutmeg who is the needier animal. These boys are wonderful and highly loveable.

Cara is a dear cat who is timid but incredibly affectionate. She was rescued from the cold rain of fall less than a year old, heavily pregnant, unvaccinated and symptomatic with Calicivirus. Her kittens were born and one little figher survived. Mom was terribly ill and almost did not survive herself. She was being forcefed, given sub-q fluids, and major painkillers. We held her and rocked her and spoke to her and sang to her and told her stories of when she would be better. Against what seemed to be all odds Cara pulled through and started to recover from the worst and most life threatening of symptoms. That was great news, but what isn't so great for Miss Cara Bara Juice is that she is still symptomatic and needs some individualized attention so we can help her system fight the virus which can last two weeks or a lifetime in an active and contagious form. This is a case for someone who does not normally and will be able to not foster again for about a year after Cara has gone and the home has been cleaned. This is a virus that first kitten shots vaccinate against. It is too bad that didn't get those. We would like a foster parent who can help us by using homeopathy and naturopathy and some other therapies to hep bolster Cara's system and help it in it's fight against this nasty thing. The great news is that if she has the virus she will be symptomatic, so if she stops having the few minor symptoms she has left it will mean she has recovered. An easy tell. At the moment Cara sneezes violently and will often have lots of gross green boogers. Sometimes the gross green boogers have some blood in them. Yuck. She is also a drooler, likely from the horrid festering ulcers that came with the full blown initial sick but which are now completely gone. Rule of thumb, if she purrs she drools. No, no, no, I don't mean a little bit of drool, I mean a flowing river. I hate it, my roomate doesn't mind as much and she is really, really affectionate and cute. Cara must be an only cat and must be in a home that will have no other cats for about a year after she leaves and it is cleaned.

Dogs:

*URGENT* JESEE

Please see Jesse's story at the top of the page.

Tracey is a special case. From a bad hoarding situation where she spent the first two years of her life tied to a tree without any socialization and where she was possibly abused by the human(s) she did know, this dog exhibits extreme fear of the world in general and what I can only call a phobia of people. She is a long term project and is not a dog that can be moved from foster home to foster home, so she would be a longer term commitment. She has been with the founder until now and has been making slow but steady progress. Any potential home, foster or adoptive, must understand fully that this dog's progress will be s-l-o-w and, beyond not likely ever being a happy go lucky dog, she may never be able to be overly affectionate or 'normal'. Her fear does not lead to aggression, but at it's extreme she can be so fearful as to not eat, drink, pee or poop for 2 to 3 days!!! This can be very dangerous to her well-being. Underneath the fear is a super sweet super darling angelic dog who wants so badly to be affectionate and loving. It may take years but the goal is to help her overcome her fear to a point where she can receive love. Tracey is not clean in the house and unless fear peeing (which is when the fear is lessened so that she can pee in fear) she will not pee or poop in front of you. She must be in a home with other dogs as she takes great comfort in other dogs and is so extremely fearful of humans. At this time Tracey needs to be put into another room to eat or she simply will not. She is quite skinny and the fear uses up so much energy. She prefers to be left alone before she will start to eat, but she is working on eating while one of the two humans in her home is in the room with her. Baby steps... baby steps....
